Rebels no match for Skippers

January 11, 2013

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Midway through the first half and down only two to rival North Kingstown, South Kingstown coach Jim Champion called a timeout to settle his team.
“Guys,” he said, motioning to the scoreboard, “you’re doing great.”
Champion’s been around for a while, but even he couldn’t have predicted what was about to happen.
North Kingstown increased its effort to move the ball around on offense and using their depth, tired out the Rebels and outscored them 19-3 in the final 7 minutes, 14 seconds of the first half en route to a 56-39 win Wednesday night.

It was ugly, but Prout will take it

January 11, 2013

WAKEFIELD – Phil Quinn doesn’t expect the Prout girls basketball team’s play to win a beauty contest.
But even he could admit Wednesday’s win over West Warwick wouldn’t have earned the Crusaders $10 in a game of Monopoly.

URI football not going to Penn State

January 11, 2013

There will be no trip to Happy Valley for the University of Rhode Island football.
On New Year’s Day, three URI football players tweeted the Rams would play Penn State in the fall of 2013. Rhode Island Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn wouldn’t confirm the rumor Monday and Tuesday Penn State football’s Director of Operations Kirk Diehl said he hadn’t heard anything about the two teams playing. Tuesday evening URI head football coach Joe Trainer said the game was possible, but it wasn’t a sure thing.
