Hirst, Landolfi propose alternate district plan

February 2, 2012

HOPKINTON - The new district maps that were approved by the Rhode Island Reappointment Commission in December, 2011 will impact many cities and towns throughout the state. Hopkinton could be one of the communities most drastically affected by the redistricting, because it will become split between two house districts, 38 and 39, and have to add a fourth polling location in town.

'Country guy' changed community journalism

February 1, 2012

The world of community journalism was a little different in Bill Foster’s day.

“He wasn’t a high-stepping, suit-wearing professional. He was a country guy,: remembers Allan Clarke, Pendulum columnist, who began working here in 1970 under the tutelage of Foster, who bought the paper in 1964 and owned it through 1984, when he sold it to ABC/Capital Cities.

Foster died on Jan. 23, at the age of 88, in Bradenton, Fla.

Plans for new fire station in the works?

February 1, 2012

EAST GREENWCH — Imagine downtown East Greenwich without a fire station.

It's possible; and it may be for the better, East Greenwich Fire District Chief Peter Henrikson believes.

A combination of two factors should prompt the district to take a look at relocating Station 1 to a new site at the southwest corner of Post Road and Cedar Avenue. Henrikson told the Board of Fire Commissioners last Thursday.

For more on the story, check out the Feb. 2 edition of the East Greenwich Pendulum.

Global Game Jam a hit at N.E. Tech

February 1, 2012

EAST GREENWICH – Spoiler alert: The following story contains graphic violence; computer programmed graphic designs, that is.

For 48 hours last weekend, starting Friday, one of three New England Institute of Technology campuses on Division Road became a host site for the 2012 Global Game Jam, a two-day international gamer event. Nine teams in East Greenwich – along with 244 ‘jam’ sites worldwide, were given a certain theme and had two days to produce an original video game based on that theme, playable online all over the world by Sunday afternoon.
