PROVIDENCE—This past week, Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee signed into law the ‘Good-Time’ bill, which will prevent criminals convicted of serious offenses from being released earlier because of good behavior. The legislation, drafted last year by Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin and introduced by Representative Teresa Tanzi (D-South Kingstown, Narragansett), along with Senator V. Susan Sosnowski (D-South Kingstown, New Shoreham), is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2012.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The sound of a wolf’s soulful song to the skies fills the air in Dave Hornoff’s cozy cabin on Pojac Point. It is coming from a video playing on his laptop.
No, wait! It’s coming from his gorgeous Australian shepherd Cheney (for Lon, the actor, not Dick, the heartbeat-away-from-the-presidency guy.)
Wait! It’s coming from Dave’s cell phone.
Oh, good grief. It’s coming from all three. At once.

NORTH KINGSTOWN—When North Kingstown senior Stephanie Andersen learned, in her sophomore year, she ranked second in the class of 2012, she knew the rest of her time in high school could be spent either chasing the top spot or accepting that every aspect of your life can’t be controlled.
“As a sophomore I was really proud of [second place] and I definitely wanted to keep that spot,” she recalls. “But after a while, I just had to let go and realize you can only do your best and see where it goes from there.”

NORTH KINGSTOWN—North Kingstown High School senior Olivia Edwards is not perfect.
At least, that’s what she would have you believe.
The valedictorian for NK’s Class of 2012, Edwards says she has learned a lot about herself over the past four years. When she stands in front of her fellow classmates at graduation tomorrow evening at the Ryan Center at URI, the shy teenager with a passion for playing the cello will share what she feels is the biggest lesson she’ll take away from high school.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Claire Schwarzbach, a 6th grade math teacher at Broad Rock Middle School, was named South Kingstown’s Teacher of the Year.
Schwarzbach has been teaching for 22 years and is “excited and honored” to be named Teacher of the Year.
“I feel really lucky to be in South Kingstown teaching,” Schwarzbach said. “I’ve had a lot of colleagues and administrators who have been really supportive and have helped me grow as a person and as a educator.”

NARRAGANSETT—The Town Council failed a motion Monday evening which would have addressed the town’s energy saving needs through the Energy Services Company project (ESCO). The initiative was organized by The Washington County Regional Planning Council (WCRPC) and Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI), an energy evaluation company, who completed an audit of town facilities, assessing their energy efficiency and identifying potential areas for cost savings.

You may recall that it was raining last Tuesday. I decided to spend the morning in the woods anyway since it was the last day of the spring turkey hunting season.
After getting fairly wet in spite of the rain gear I was wearing and not seeing or hearing a gobbler, I decided to explore an old roadway I had never been on before. I came upon a family cemetery in the middle of the woods in West Greenwich.
