KINGSTON—Catherine Woteki, Chief Scientist and Undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, paid a visit to the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday to speak with university educators and researchers about environmental projects in which they are involved. The visit also involved a tour of URI’s research facilities at the Coastal Insitute, which houses initiatives such as the Watershed Watch program.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Wakefield native Nessa Richman is making her return to Robinson Street as the new executive director of the South Kingstown Land Trust, the first in the organization’s nearly 30-year history.
“What I say is I never really left,” Richman said of returning to Rhode Island. She was born at South County Hospital and grew up on Robinson Street.

CRANSTON – On the 71st hole of the 29th RIGA Stroke Play Championship, soon-to-be-47-year old Charlie Blanchard and 19-year old Jamison Randall were tied for the lead.
And with one swing from Blanchard and one from Randall, a changing of the guard took place.
Trying to avoid a playoff, Blanchard sailed a 9-iron over the green from 150 yards out while Randall identified a flyer lie in the rough, hit his approach on the green and when Blanchard couldn’t get up and down, two-putted for a one-stroke win, avenging his loss to Blanchard in the State Amateur last month.
North Kingstown was on pins and needles last weekend as local Olympian Elizabeth Beisel attempted to bring home a gold medal in London and, this week, we bring you an eyewitness report of the festivities as Rhode Island came together to watch one of its own on the world's grandest sports stage.

Two weeks ago under the rubric “Reinvent Rhode Island” the lead story in the Sunday edition of the state’s largest daily newspaper dealt with the plight of single mothers. This piece, which featured 36-year-old, mother of two, Crystal M. Tetreault covered most of the front page and two full pages in the first section.
We learn that Miss Tetreault was herself the child of a 17-year old mother who never went to high school. She was raised in foster care, a group home and by an aunt. (Thank you, taxpayers.) Her father was absent until she was an adult.
