NARRAGANSETT– Two-time Olympian Elizabeth Beisel of North Kingstown goes for the gold this Friday in her second swim event, the 200-meter backstroke, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Beisel, who set a personal best of 4:31.27 in the 400-meter individual medley on Saturday, earning a silver medal, and the honor of taking second place in the world, is a fierce competitor.

NARRAGANSETT—Tyler Pereira and his family will go on a long journey this Friday to Hershey, Pennsylvania, although it is not to visit the famed chocolate company’s headquarters. Pereira, for a second time, will be competing in the Hershey-sponsored Track and Field Games North American Final, a competition attended by numerous, qualified young athletes from across the country.

PROVIDENCE—Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley filed a brief with her office last week, seeking to punish National Grid with fines in the millions of dollars. The culmination of a review process of the utility company’s implementation of its Electric Emergency Plan (EEP), the 27-page report highlights significant procedural missteps on the part of National Grid during last year’s Tropical Storm Irene and the October snowstorm.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Ocean Mist appealed the state Coastal Resources Management Council’s approval of a 202-foot sheet pile sea wall in Matunuck.
Lawyers representing the business at 895 Matunuck Beach Road filed the appeal in Providence County Superior Court July 27, the final day businesses and homeowners had to appeal the decision May decision.
Kevin Finnegan, owner of the Ocean Mist is asking that the decision be reversed.

NARRAGANSETT—Superintendent of Schools Katherine Sipala held a discussion Wednesday evening with the School Committee regarding recently released index scores for schools in Rhode Island. The Department of Education (RIDE) has developed a new performance measuring system for approximately 300 schools, ranking them with a point score as well as a qualifying grade, from 'priority' being the worst to 'commended'.

NARRAGANSETT—Walking into the Coastal Institute at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, one comes upon a wall fixture unlike those around it. Upon closer inspection, it is revealed as a strange visual document that projects both scientific information and an artistic touch. The piece is the work of URI undergraduate Chad Self, who embarked on a project which blended both his studies in art and interest in oceanography.

SOUTH COUNTY – The towns of South Kingstown and Narragansett are collaborating to form a volunteer emergency response team, which will staff a new joint emergency shelter.
Instead of having two shelters at Narragansett and South Kingstown high schools, residents of both towns will now take shelter at South Kingstown High School. This will allow emergency officials and volunteers to join forces.

COVENTRY —Janet Mansour will be hosting the second annual Janet’s Doggy Bags Pet Food Drive, where she hopes this year’s event will be as successful as last.
Mansour, a teacher at the Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School in Coventry, thought up her idea of a pet food drive after seeing her students donate to various pet shelters for school.
Lesley Doonan, Coordinator of Volunteer Services for Animals (VSA) Warwick has partnered up with Mansour again this year to help collect pet food items.

NORTH KINGSTOWN—For the 100 or so people on hand at North Kingstown High School Saturday to watch Elizabeth Beisel swim in the 400-meter Individual Medley at the London Olympics the final 50 meters of her swim was absolutely grueling.
It was suspenseful enough watching the former Skipper trail by half of a body length to China’s Ye Shiwen coming off the final turn but what made viewing the race even more thrilling was the quality of the internet stream.
