With less than two weeks left before school resumes in North Kingstown, the question on the minds of countless teachers, administrators, parents and students is: Will the roof at Suzanne M. Henseler Quidnessett Elementary School be fixed in time for the first day of classes?
It appears that answer is a resounding 'no.'

The biggest move in Rhode Island high school basketball this offseason was Eric Simonelliâs departure from Prout up north to La Salle.
Replacing him wasnât going to be easy, but first-year Prout athletic director Mike Traficante thinks the school â and the program â have their man.
After a summer of searching, Traficante told The Times Wednesday that Westerly boys basketball assistant coach Jed OâMalley will take over for Simonelli this season, beating out two other finalists for the job.
In the years I have been writing this op-ed I recall receiving only two letters and several emails. The latter have been mostly complimentary.
Both letters, on the other hand, were pretty harsh. The first, written back in the second George W. Bush administration, accused me of being a conservative and âa Karl Rove stoogeâ. The latter charge I found interesting since I have never met or spoken to Mr. Rove and he wouldnât know me if he bumped into me on the street.

WEST GREENWICH - The Woodville Barn at the University of Rhode Island W. Alton Jones Campus has been the spring and summer home for a thriving maternal colony of little brown bats for a very long time. Every March or April, the same colony returns to roost in the barn for the warmer months, and each member of the colony, which is females only, returns from its far away hibernation ready to bear one pup. It is a truly fascinating life cycle.

RICHMOND - On Tuesday man played the Willow Valley Disc Golf Course in Richmond unlike any other man that has ever played it before. It is no superpower or rare ability that sets this man apart from other course competitors, but an indomitable will to be the most well-traveled American ambassador of the game possible.

COVENTRY â Two young cousins from Coventry have joined forces during the past two months to help raise money for Christopher Carlino, an 11-year-old boy who was re-diagnosed with Lymphoma.
At the age of seven, Christopher, who attends Father John V. Doyle School, was diagnosed with Hodgkinâs Lymphoma.
He had to undergo four months of chemotherapy at Hasbro Childrenâs Hospital to treat the cancer.
After a year of waiting and hoping, the young Coventry resident went into remission.
His parents had to take Christopher to the hospital every three months to have tests done.

NORTH KINGSTOWN â Rick Belavanceâs love of the Bay, its bounty â and the great sea beyond â began when he was 10.
âI started out goofing around in Greenwich Bay,â recalls Bellavance, who grew up in Warwick and lives in the North End of North Kingstown. âI walked down from Cowesett and dug shellfish in the area of Chepiwanoxet.â He also ventured out onto the water, piloting his own small craft.
âI had a little skiff my dad gave me.â
His father, Dick Belavance, is a former URI professor of oceanography and life sciences who shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with his son. He still does.
