SOUTH KINGSTOWN—As the days drew nearer to high school graduation, South Kingstown High School student Montara Erickson grew increasingly curious as to what her future would hold. A graduate of the 2012 class and member of the Rhode Island Honor Society, Erickson will journey to Germany this fall as a recipient of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship (CBYX).
“I am really excited,” said Erickson. “I had applied to some other scholarships of similar sort and didn’t get them, so I was hoping to get this.”

NORTH KINGSTOWN - The heat didnât deter everyone from visiting the Wickford Art Festival last weekend. However, long-time participants of the 50-year old festival noted that there were fewer people and sales than in years past.
âThe heat is just killing the show,â said Jim Murphy, a 20-year veteran of the festival.
Jeanne Pierce, who was showing at the festival for the third time, said she only sold one piece on Saturday.
Pierce, like many artists, blamed the heat for reducing foot-traffic near their booths.

Next fall, Rhode Island voters will again choose who will represent them in the General Assembly for the next term, and in many cases they will have to chose between their current representative and new and old challengers. Such is the case in Districts 38, 39 and 36.

I never wanted to write about Caleb Chafee and his now celebrated graduation party on Memorial Day.
Fortuitously, I had a couple of days off right at the time the ânewsâ broke, so I didnât have to cover it. Were I on the job, I still may have decided to write about something else because I didnât â and still donât â consider it news.

EAST GREENWICH â Outgoing Varnum Continentals President Bruce MacGunnigle loves to hand out certificates, something he has done countless times for new members and those who have achieved.
But the retiring MacGunnigle had no idea he would be the recipient of a new certificate for meritorious service after 26 years of service to the Continentals, first as Colonel, then as President.
The surprise framed certificate â the first-ever Howard Vernon Allen Award â was created for MacGunnigle and given to him at the groupâs June meeting, its last of the current fiscal year.
