February 10th
A week after Governor Chafee proposed increasing the meals tax from eight percent to 10 percent, restaurants owners across South Kingstown and Narragansett sound off.
This week University of Rhode Island students began springing up their own occupy movement.
The attorneys for Village Liquors and town of South Kingstown also filed their briefs this week on why or why not fifth liquor license exists.

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - Thousands of National Grid customers, including URI and Chariho High School, were without power for a short time on Monday morning after an explosion and subsequent fire badly damaged a transformer at the substation on Shumunkanuc Hill Road.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The North Kingstown school committee voted 5-2 Tuesday night to submit to the town council a proposed 2012/2013 budget that reflects a four-percent increase. The meeting took a different turn than was expected, however, when Superintendent Dr. Philip Auger became emotional as he presented his recommended cuts.
Committee members William Mudge and Melvoid Benson cast the dissenting votes.

EAST GREENWICH — Seniority will no longer be the driving force behind teacher assignments or promotions if school officials have their way.
Against a backdrop of nonexistent negotiations on a new teacher contract, which is set to expire Aug. 31, Superintendent Victor Mercurio presented the report of the Commission on Retaining High Quality Teachers to the School Committee Tuesday night.

State Rep. Robert A. Watson (R-Dist 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), still facing a charge of possession of marijuana in connection with his Jan. 21 arrest in South Kingstown, was spared additional legal jeopardy this week when the town's Police Department announced it would not charge him with driving under the influence.

In this week's Standard Times, we take a look at the issue of diversity through the eyes of current students at Exeter-West Greenwich High School, one of the "whitest" schools in the state.
