French class 'rocks' EGHS last Wednesday

EAST GREENWICH — Seldom does a French lesson get students out of their seats and dancing.

But that's what happened last week in the East Greenwich High School Auditorium, with some help from Grand Derangement, a band from the Canadian maritime province of Nova Scotia, whose diverse music ties in with the history element of French language classes.

About 850 French language students from around the state, in two shifts, were bused to the school for the concert, an annual event sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French Rhode Island.

Philbrick to be charged with DUI, death resulting

SOUTH KINGSTOWN— Dean Philbrick, 46, of 50 Harcourt Ave., Wakefield, the driver of a motor vehicle which crashed and took the life of a South Kingstown female last week, will be charged by South Kingstown Police Department. Erica Knowles, 23, of 95 Wood Lane, South Kingstown, died last Wednesday when the vehicle operated by Philbrick crashed into a tree on Torrey Road.

“We have a warrant for his arrest,” said SKPD Captain Jeffery Allen. “There will be two charges, driving under the influence, death resulting, and driving to endanger, resulting in death.”

URI will postpone efforts on Doyle case until State Police investigation complete

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—The University of Rhode Island, after announcing that it would conduct an independent examination of Daniel L. Doyle’s unpaid debt to the university, has decided to postpone its efforts until the State Police have completed their investigation.

The proposed two-percent additional tax on restaurant meals and beverages has emerged as the big headline from Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s 2012 budget. His notion that it would fund additional aid to school districts didn’t seem to get as much ink.
My advice? Go someplace nice for lunch, order a good meal and a cocktail, and stop worrying about it. The tax ain’t going to happen.

Hazard pre-school moving to South Road

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, the South Kingstown School Committee decided to move the Hazard pre-school program to the South Road School one year after voting to move it to Peace Dale.
While many teachers from the Hazard pre-school program spoke to the committee on the benefits of expanding the program, the school committee only decided to relocate the program, not expand it.

DEM expanding Galilee parking

NARRAGANSETT—The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is seeking bids for the potential construction of parking garages in the Port of Galilee. Lots 96 and 117 have been identified for development, which will be leased by DEM to a builder after a competitive bid process.
