NEIT's Flynn invited to State of Union

Erin Flynn, a 25-year veteran administrator at the New England Institute of Technology, was invited to President Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday as the guest of U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin (D-R.I., District 2).

Flynn has partnered with Langevin on one of his key workforce development efforts, the High School Cyber Foundations Competition, which Langevin introduced to his home state as a model for introducing young people to expanding industries like cybersecurity.

TC awards mobile park owner refund

The owner of a mobile home park successfully won a refund of his impact fee from the Town Council Monday night.

Harry R. Lewis, owner of Sun Valley Mobile Home Village on Cooper Lane, received his $4,547 impact fee for Lot 23 on his property by the council's unanimous vote after he requested a refund from the town two weeks ago.

EGHS to present 'Once Upon A Mattress'

EAST GREENWICH – Children of all ages will be delighted in February when the East Greenwich Drama Department stages the funny “Once Upon A Mattress.”

The vehicle that made Carol Burnett a star on Broadway, “Once Upon A Mattress,” is the musical version of The Princess and The Pea. The delightful score was written by Mary Rodgers, daughter of the immortal musical writer Richard Rodgers of Rodgers and Hart and Rodgers and Hammerstein fame.

Sarah Jessica Parker starred in a revival a decade ago in New York.

Townsend chest brings in $3.5M at auction

A historic chest dating back to 1756, commissioned for Lt. Col. Oliver Arnold of East Greenwich and his wife, Mary Oliver Arnold, took top honors at last weekend's Important Americana auction at Sotheby's auction house in New York City.

The chest, built by prominent eighteenth-century cabinetmaker John Townsend of Newport, fetched $3,554,500, the top price along the Important Americana items up for bid, said Darrell Rocha, a spokesman for the auction house. The price also set a Sotheby's record for a high chest of drawers.

End to storage at Varnum might be issue for EGSC

EAST GREENWICH - While the School Department's financial advisory board would like to see an eventual end to the leasing of storage space in Varnum Armory, that may be easier said than done.

Facilities Director Robert Wilmarth presented a report on the activities at the armory to the School Committee last Tuesday, prior to the beginning of a series of workshops which will produce its fiscal 2013 budget. The committee took no action at that meeting.

SRICC granted tax exemption on building

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – During Monday’s Town Council meeting, The Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce was granted a $7,000 tax exemption for this year on its building located at 230 Old Tower Hill Road with a 3-2 splintered council vote cast amidst rising tempers.

In today's paper, we have the result of the contentious South Kingstown Town Council meeting Monday night in which the Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce was granted a $7,000 tax exemption in place of their tax appropriation from the town.

On Saturday, Rep. Watson of East Greenwich was charged a second time with marijuana possession after South Kingstown Police found his car stuck in the snow with a flat tire.

We pay a lot of lip service in this country to the notion of freedom, democracy (note the lower-case d) and self-government. But despite the many and varied lessons history teaches us from the most ancient civilizations to the present day, the idea of a benevolent dictatorship still appears to hold a measure of allure for a lot of folks.
