Brown students study ecological impact of living close to water

February 16, 2011

PROVIDENCE–During the fast-paced lame duck session which saw the end of the Democratic Party's control of the House, climate change legislation which would have curbed industrial greenhouse gas emissions across the economy was squashed. As recently as Tuesday a climate change denier from Oklahoma, Senator Inhofe, and the former head of the Environmental Protection Agency squared off at the Republican-led EPA hearings. But while Congress debates, the science is in, carbon is rising, and the clock is ticking. Town planning departments across the state map flood zones and develop strategies for withstanding future floods which result from a changing climate. Meanwhile, undergraduate and graduate students at Brown's Center for Environmental Studies are working to analyze local events including past floods and are developing strategies for a sustainable environment.

Wizards getting their groove back

February 15, 2011

NEWPORT — West Warwick forward Ryan Lawton’s 25 points kept his team in Monday’s night game with Division II’s top team, Rogers. His 21 rebounds created numerous second-chance and transition opportunities for the Wizards. And his six blocks intimidated the Vikings in the lane.
But the junior’s biggest play in the 60-57 victory over Rogers came on one of his three assists.
With Lawton and fellow junior Max Motroni playing a two-man game on the left side of the court, Lawton kicked the ball out from the post and Motroni hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 36.1 seconds remaining in the contest.

Politics as Usual (Opinion): Caruolo an inspired choice by Chafee and one worth watching

February 15, 2011

A good argument can be made that Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s appointment of George Caruolo to be chairman of the Board of Regents for Elementary Education was an inspired choice.
Caruolo is universally respected as being smart and tough-minded, he has shown that he can come up with solutions to tough problems (whether some of those were the best solutions we will discuss a few paragraphs down) and he knows enough about the legislative process and how the Statehouse works to fight his way to the powerful position of House Majority Leader.
