COVENTRY â The scoreboard with 11 minutes, 33 seconds left in Fridayâs game showed the improvement the Coventry girls basketball team has made since the beginning of December.
Even though the Oakers had been heavily outplayed by visiting La Salle, they were still only down six points with a chance to cut the deficit even further.
La Salle went on to run away with the Division I-South contest 53-37 thanks to their full-court, man-to-man defense, but the Oakers showed with some offensive refinement they could be a team that competes for a playoff spot in a very tough division.
COVENTRY â There was a palpable sense of relief emanating from the Coventry boys basketball teamâs locker room after Friday nightâs Division I crossover contest with Mt. Pleasant.
Fridayâs game may have finished just the first third of the season, but for coach Tom Campbell and the Oakers, Fridayâs game was nearly a must-win after dissipating losses to La Salle and Smithfield where the Oakers had a lead in the second half and blew it.

WEST WARWICK â Wizardsâ guard John Morrison is quietly developing a reputation as one of the better shooters in the state.
He already has two games this season in which he made six three-pointers.
Last night, however, Morrison showed he has more to his game than just shooting by totaling 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists in an impressive all around performance that lead the Wizards to a 87-55 win over the Central Falls Warriors.
NORTH KINGSTOWN â It was the elephant in the room Thursday night North Kingstown High.
Just one night earlier the Coventry High wrestling team had lost its first dual meet of the season in frustrating circumstances to North Providence, while the Skippers were blown out at home by Hendricken.

NARRAGANSETTâRejecting the ACLUâs legal arguments, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit upheld the constitutionality of the Town of Narragansettâs highly-publicized 2005 âorange stickerâ ordinance on Wednesday. However, in upholding the ordinance on its face, the court acknowledged that it could still be subject to constitutional challenge in its application to particular cases, and the ACLU plans to go back to court to pursue those challenges.
