NARRAGANSETT--Joseph Penrose and Alex LaVallee co-own and recently opened Anytime Fitness, a 24-hour gym on Nov. 1. The gym is one of three such centers in Rhode Island and is open seven days a week throughout the year. It is guarded by security cameras and accessed through the use of a individualized security card. But if you enter, prepare to be energized.
“Fitness is not a sprint it’s a marathon,” LaVallee said, laughing. “That’s a good quote,” Penrose said.
WEST GREENWICH – With over 100,000 Christmas trees and 14 varieties, Big John Leyden’s Christmas Tree Farm in West Greenwich has been a part of the holiday tradition for many families for 40 years now.
“We have real trees for real people. It’s about tradition, tradition, tradition,” John Leyden, founder and owner of the tree farm said in front of the television cameras from CBS morning news show.
If you enter the tiny Ben Thomas Gallery at the end of the deck at 88 Brown St., you’ll find yourself surrounded by images of familiar and beloved spots in the Ocean State.
A Jamestown native, Thomas is a photographer who possesses a boundless fascination with lighthouses at sunset, dories tied up at the dock, seagulls in a row, bridges emerging from fog and quirky views of sails. His topics include historic spots, too, such as the Gilbert Stuart birthplace.
He likes to experiment with reflected light so many of his pieces have a mirrored effect.
RICHMOND – The true first step toward bringing full-time activities for area seniors back to the town's community center occurred this past Thursday afternoon.
NARRAGANSETT– This weekend, local artist Joya Maxwell will open her heart and home for the second annual Holiday Faire on Kentara Green in Narragansett. In collaboration with The Splendid Loon’s Nina Briggs and Susan Letendre Imports, Maxwell’s two day event will offer an intimate holiday shopping experience with one-of-a-kind gifts for the art lover.
The open house will feature a unique assortment of fine art, ceramic bead necklaces, porcelain and silver pendants, whimsical holiday pins, and fair-trade goods including stained glass jewelry and hand weavings from the indigenous people of Guatemala and Mexico. The venue will provide visitors an opportunity to experience one of Narragansett’s historic homes by renowned architects McKim, Mead and White.
Whenever the Christmas season rolls around and I’m in the presence of pine trees – as I was last week, trekking through the tree farms of Exeter for a story elsewhere in this newspaper – I am reminded of my dear old friend Antoinetta Goodwin and her discovery that Christmas trees are an anti-depressant.
She was a true South County character, renowned for her patriotism and dedication to the state bird, the Rhode Island Red chicken. A tiny woman, she made seasonal costumes for them and had a huge pair bolted to the roof rack of her station wagon, each waving an American flag.
WESTERLY -- A 31-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning in a sting by state police for possession of child pornography.
