RICHMOND – The true first step toward bringing full-time activities for area seniors back to the town's community center occurred this past Thursday afternoon.

NARRAGANSETT– This weekend, local artist Joya Maxwell will open her heart and home for the second annual Holiday Faire on Kentara Green in Narragansett. In collaboration with The Splendid Loon’s Nina Briggs and Susan Letendre Imports, Maxwell’s two day event will offer an intimate holiday shopping experience with one-of-a-kind gifts for the art lover.
The open house will feature a unique assortment of fine art, ceramic bead necklaces, porcelain and silver pendants, whimsical holiday pins, and fair-trade goods including stained glass jewelry and hand weavings from the indigenous people of Guatemala and Mexico. The venue will provide visitors an opportunity to experience one of Narragansett’s historic homes by renowned architects McKim, Mead and White.

South County chicken lady inspired others

Whenever the Christmas season rolls around and I’m in the presence of pine trees – as I was last week, trekking through the tree farms of Exeter for a story elsewhere in this newspaper – I am reminded of my dear old friend Antoinetta Goodwin and her discovery that Christmas trees are an anti-depressant.
She was a true South County character, renowned for her patriotism and dedication to the state bird, the Rhode Island Red chicken. A tiny woman, she made seasonal costumes for them and had a huge pair bolted to the roof rack of her station wagon, each waving an American flag.
